Thanksgiving may still feel a few months away, but at Spring Valley Turkey Farm in Old Bridge, New Jersey, one of our favorite times of year is about to begin.
2026 Thanksgiving turkey reservations are opening this week!
For families searching for a fresh Thanksgiving turkey in New Jersey, this is the time to start thinking about what you want at the center of your Thanksgiving table.
At Spring Valley Turkey Farm, our Thanksgiving turkeys are fresh, not frozen. They are locally raised and processed just days before Thanksgiving so our customers can pick up a fresh, oven-ready turkey for their holiday meal.
If you’ve always purchased a frozen turkey from the grocery store, you may be wondering what the difference really is.
Let’s talk turkey.

Nothing brings family together quite like a beautifully roasted Thanksgiving turkey. Fresh, local, and raised with care at Spring Valley Turkey Farm.
“Fresh” isn’t simply a marketing term when it comes to poultry.
According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service’s poultry labeling guidance, raw poultry labeled fresh has never been held below 26°F.
That is different from poultry sold as frozen.
USDA explains that this definition was established to better match what consumers expect when they purchase fresh poultry – a bird that has not been frozen solid.
At Spring Valley Turkey Farm, our turkeys are processed as fresh poultry shortly before Thanksgiving, rather than being frozen months in advance and stored until the holiday season.
That means when you bring home your Spring Valley turkey, you’re bringing home a fresh Thanksgiving turkey ready for the holiday, not a frozen bird that needs several days to thaw.
One of the biggest practical differences between a fresh turkey and a frozen turkey comes before you ever turn on the oven.
Frozen turkeys need time to thaw safely.
USDA recommends allowing approximately 24 hours of refrigerator thawing time for every four to five pounds of whole turkey.
Think about what that means for a larger Thanksgiving bird.
A frozen turkey can require several days in the refrigerator before it is fully thawed and ready to prepare.
For anyone hosting Thanksgiving, that is one more thing to calculate during an already busy week.
With a fresh Thanksgiving turkey from Spring Valley Turkey Farm, you don’t have to build that lengthy thawing process into your Thanksgiving preparation.
Pick up your turkey, keep it properly refrigerated according to the instructions provided, and get ready for Thanksgiving dinner.
This is a question that sometimes surprises people.
Yes.
You may occasionally notice a small amount of ice around the cavity or joints of a properly chilled fresh turkey.
That does not automatically mean the turkey was frozen.
Because fresh poultry must be kept extremely cold for food safety and quality, small amounts of ice can sometimes develop in very cold areas of the bird.
The important distinction is that USDA defines fresh poultry according to the temperatures at which the bird has been maintained, not simply whether a customer happens to notice a little surface ice.
So if you pick up your Spring Valley turkey and notice a little ice in the cavity, there is no need to panic.
Your bird is still fresh.

Free range turkeys raised for Thanksgiving at a veteran family-owned farm in Old Bridge, NJ serving Central New Jersey and Staten Island.
For many families, Thanksgiving dinner is one of the most meaningful meals of the entire year.
And the turkey is usually the centerpiece.
Buying your Thanksgiving turkey directly from a local New Jersey turkey farm gives you an opportunity to know where your bird came from and support a local farm at the same time.
Spring Valley Turkey Farm is located right here in Old Bridge, NJ, serving families throughout Central New Jersey and beyond.
Our Thanksgiving turkeys are raised locally and processed shortly before the holiday.
Instead of picking a frozen bird out of a supermarket freezer weeks ahead of Thanksgiving, our customers reserve the approximate size they need and then pick up their fresh Thanksgiving turkey directly from the farm shortly before Thanksgiving.
It’s a different Thanksgiving turkey-buying experience, and one that has become a tradition for many local families.
Another term you may see when reserving a Spring Valley turkey is oven-ready.
Our whole Thanksgiving turkeys are processed and prepared so that when you receive your bird, it is ready for you to refrigerate and prepare for your Thanksgiving meal.
Of course, you’ll still season, brine, stuff or prepare your turkey according to your family’s favorite recipe.
But the processing has already been taken care of.
That makes Thanksgiving week a little easier.
And if you’re hosting Thanksgiving for the first time, eliminating the need to thaw a large frozen bird for several days can simplify your preparation even more.
Whether your turkey is fresh or frozen, proper food safety remains important.
USDA recommends cooking a whole turkey to a minimum internal temperature of 165°F, measured with a food thermometer.
For a whole bird, USDA recommends checking the temperature in three places:
The thickest part of the breast
The innermost part of the thigh
The innermost part of the wing

Now for the news we know many of you have been waiting for:
Spring Valley Turkey Farm’s 2026 Thanksgiving turkey reservations are opening this week!
Once reservations officially open, customers will be able to select an approximate turkey weight range and place a deposit to reserve their bird.
Because our turkeys are living, growing birds, not prepackaged products manufactured to an exact weight, we cannot guarantee an exact final weight months in advance.
That is why reservations are made by approximate weight range.
If you already know how many people will be sitting around your Thanksgiving table this year, now is a great time to start thinking about the size turkey you’ll need.
